Final Statement (end of coursework)

I have unfortunately come to the end of my coursework period. Doing Media for the first time, my skills of mine were challenged. Learning new softwares and also learning how to use the mac, which were all new to me. I have really enjoyed doing each and every coursework, although at times it was really challenging. My teachers were there to support us and make sure that we were working to the best of our abilities. Doing this course, I feel that i have learned and gained a lot of experience which will hopefully help me more by doing my exams at the end of the year.

Evaluation - Question 7

Looking back to your preliminary task, what do you feel that you have learnt in the progression from it to the
full product?

Evaluation - Question 6

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing the product?

Evaluation - Question 5

How did you attract/address your audience?

Finishing our film opening, I think that we did reach our target audience to an extent. But then again I could be biased because it is my finishing media product and will praise it all they way.
I got my younger brother who is in secondary school and is 15 years of age, which is the age group we decided to target for the audience. I got him to watch my video and ask him some questions on what he thought, if it was successful and what we could’ve done to improve on it. Because he’s my sibling he could be biased and not answer truthfully, which is a downfall. He is also a GCSE Media student so he would pick out bits and pieces and say things that would be in media terminology. My brother has promised to be truthful when asking him the questions.

What stood out when watching the video?
I really liked the beginning bit, the way the production logo was designed and the colours that were used. I think that being a media student; I know what the colour red connotes and what you would associate with when you saw that colour. So boys my age would also associate it with these words, because that’s what you instantly think when you see the colour.

What are you first thoughts/reactions when watching my film opening?
I like the way the credits were done, how they were on a black background. Very simple, but stands out so that we can focus on the credits only.

Do you think this is a horror or a thriller genre and why?
I think that it a thriller. This is because of the violence, mobs attacking and kidnapping the young girl.

What do you think I could do to improve on my film opening?
You could’ve re filmed the scenes where the mobs were going to hit the main character. I think it was too dark.

From letting my brother watching my film opening, I did end up getting some good feedback from him. By him watching that I do feel like I have reached my targeted audience and think they will like it. From how the production logo was made to the way the credits were being shown throughout the footage. Although he did say that I could’ve improved on certain things like re filming the scene where the main character got hit . All in all, by taking in this feedback I would definitely next time do it again but better by improving on the bits it weren’t so successful. Overall, my brother said he’d recommend the film to his friends if it were to come out.

Evaluation - Question 4

Who would be the audience for your media product?

Evaluation - Question 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Evaluation - Question 2

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

For our film opening my group and I decided to use a few of the AS Drama students to act in our product to represent the kind of social group we was going for and also to portray exactly the kind of image we were going for and show how the characters really are in our product.

We used Shanice Kurup as the main character’s girlfriend and be the ‘damsel in distress’ because she fits that stereotype. She is very small and petite and which fits the typical stereotype of women who are usually the ones that are in need of some sort of help from the villain. The type of colours used and clothes worn by her shows that in the film opening she is very innocent and oblivious to her boyfriend’s wrong doings with the thugs. Also her facial expressions and body language shows the audience how much she trusts her partner by the way she is holding onto him. By doing these particular detailed things at the beginning, our group wanted to show that Shanice was the ‘damsel in distress’.

Another character in our film opening that we have matched the ideology and Propp’s character types in his theory is the villain, and the fact that we used a male to be this villain. This is because we thought about how most villains are seen and whether they are male or female. We decided not to countertype the villain but match the stereotype it. By stereotyping our group thought about the various things such as clothing, colour, different shot types and angles. By doing this our audience would immediately be able to tell that that particular character is the villain. The type of clothing he wore were very dark simple clothing. This is to represent and reflect on the villains emotions and to also show the type of male he was, which we portrayed him as this daredevil and no-remorse about the things he will do kind of male. Additionally this was clearly shown when he kidnapped the girl as a ransom.

To further elaborate Propp’s theory which majorly relates and links in with our film opening. Propp’s theory is a theory where he came to the conclusion where he believed there are 31 functions and 8 character types in every story. In our media product we had 3 of the 8 character types which were – the hero, the princess (damsel in distress) and the villain. We went by Propp’s theory and used these character types so that our film has a good structure. Also so that the audience will be able to follow through and possibly enable them to have some kind of understanding of it.
